8 Surprising Reasons Why Toilets Block Frequently

Has your toilet been clogging more frequently than normal? While it may seem like an inconvenience, it is actually indicative of a bigger problem. Toilets can be fussy pieces of equipment, but if inspected frequently, they are less of a hassle when a blockage does occur.

To schedule service on your bathroom plumbing system, contact Strittmatter Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing by phone number 940-246-2075 or on our online form.

Read further to find out the eight reasons for why your toilet frequently blocks up.

1. Flushing the Wrong Things

Flushing certain things down the toilet can result in blockages if they are not flushable items. It may seem tempting to throw your paper towels in the toilet, but this can lead to your next plumbing appointment. There are only two things that should be flushed down the toilet: waste and toilet paper. Never flush any of these items down a toilet:

  • Hair
  • Floss
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Paper towels
  • Wet wipes
  • Cotton items

Hair should never be flushed down the toilet because it can quickly lead to clogs. Be sure to also keep an eye on your children, they may want to throw in their beloved toys.

2. Using the Wrong Toilet Paper

Toilet paper is safe to be flushed down the toilet, although sometimes the type of toilet paper we use can lead to clogs. Three-ply toilet paper can be the most comfortable but can clog your bathroom plumbing system.

Different toilet paper types break down uniquely in your system, which is why it is so important to think about what will benefit you and your toilet. One-ply toilet paper is the thinnest and has been shown to avoid clogging in toilets, although it is not as comfortable as other types. If you notice your toilet backing up more often, consider changing the thickness of your toilet paper.

3. Issues With the Toilet Tank

Is your toilet tank constantly backing up? If you are keeping non-flushable items out of the toilet then you may need to take a closer look at your toilet tank. A crucial factor that can modify the efficiency of your toilet is the amount of water in the tank. If your tank has the correct amount of water it will have an easier time dislodging any clogs or waste from the toilet bowl. If you do not have the necessary amount of water it won’t have enough pressure to properly flush the toilet. Call an expert plumber to inspect your water line to see if there is something preventing the water from coming back into your toilet tank.

4. Using an Older Toilet Model

Relying on an older toilet model may do more harm than good. Older models do not have the equipped accessories to create the pressure needed to flush away excess waste. Make sure to check whether you have a low-flush toilet, because this can help save you money on water expenses. Most newer low-flush toilets will be able to prevent clogs from backing up your bathroom plumbing system. For bathroom plumbing services, call your local plumber to get the job done fast.

5. Relying on Hard Water

There are different types of water and the disparities between them can result in faulty toilet function. The more minerals that are in your water determines how hard your water is. If you are relying on hard water then your toilet may not be easily flushing.

The minerals in the water can build up in the drain that leads to your toilet. If not taken care of, you might end having to replace the drain. The best way to avoid this problem is to use a water treatment system that will soften the water. The softer the water, the less minerals that will build up in your drain pipe.

6. Plumbing System Is Not Properly Vented

A bathroom plumbing system that is not properly vented can result in a frequently blocked toilet. A plumbing system needs to be vented with a drain-waste-vent system. This venting system will take waste away from your home through the pipes in your bathroom plumbing system. If your toilet is not ventilated properly then it will not be able to push waste into your plumbing system. Call your local plumbing company to inspect the ventilation for your toilet.

7. Issues With the Sewer or Septic Tank Line

One of the most common reasons why your toilet is blocking up is a problem with the sewer or septic tank line. This is a costly problem to fix because if there is one area that needs to be repaired, the whole line needs to be replaced. An experienced plumber may be able to find the blockage without needing to replace it completely.

However, this is not always the case since a blockage left for too long will cause problems elsewhere. To prevent this costly issue, have your sewer line inspected often. Strittmatter Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing is the best with sewer line repair and will work with you to quickly fix the issue.

8. Blockage in the Pipe

If you have checked all the boxes for ways to prevent a blockage in the pipe, but you are still having issues, then you may have something in your pipes. This is one of the frequent reasons why plumbers are called out to inspect pipings. A small toy, diapers or even paper towels can cause a blockage. If there is still a blockage after using a plunger and other unclogging methods, you need to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to fix the problem before the problem gets worse. Call a skilled plumber to inspect your piping and perform a drain service
