take care of your toilet
When was the last time you thought about your toilet? If you only think about it when you have a problem, it might be time to take care of it! Use these tips and tricks to keep your porcelain throne in top condition.
Handle With Care
One of the most common toilet problems can be an overflowing or clogged toilet. To take care of rising water or a clog, be sure to check out our blog about it here so you will have the tools you need to tackle the issue. When you’re handling your toilet, be sure to be careful. Before you take the lid off of the tank, make sure your hands are dry and you are grasping firmly on the left and right sides of the lid. Stand in front of the bowl instead of off to the side to avoid bumping the lid against the tank. Even though toilets are sturdy, they can crack and break- which is an even bigger problem! Once you have the lid off of the tank, lay it down on the floor out of the way. Don’t leave it propped up on its side against the tub or cabinets.
Make Some Room
Need to reach something in your bathroom? Get a step stool instead of standing on the toilet. Toilets seats, lids, and tank lids aren’t meant to be stood on. Doing so could put you at risk for a fall or breaking part of the toilet.
Also, remember not to store heavy items on the back of the toilet. The lid of the tank is strong, but heavier items can cause the porcelain to crack if they are dropped! Take care when storing small items around the toilet as well. A small item such as a hair clip can cause a serious problem if dropped in the tank where it can become stuck.
Clean Carefully
Cleaning your toilet can’t do any harm, right? Think again! When using a toilet brush to scrub, be sure there is no metal sticking out of any of the stiff bristles. These can scratch the inside of the bowl and damage the toilet. If you are using chemical cleaners, remember not to mix any of them together. Mixing household cleaners can cause dangerous, toxic fumes. Stick to one cleaner or use all natural cleaners, like vinegar, to clean the bowl.
It’s Not a Trashcan
Not everything can go down the drain. Regular bath tissue is designed to break apart and break down in the sewage system. But not everything will do this. Cotton balls, Q-tips, feminine products, and paper towels can all cause clogs deep in the pipes that can spell major plumbing trouble for you! Even items that are labeled “flushable” can cause backups. Keep a trash can nearby and opt for that instead of flushing anything other than toilet paper.
