Importance of Bathroom Plumbing Maintenance
The best way to take care of your bathroom plumbing is to schedule regular maintenance. There are many benefits to having a technician complete maintenance on your plumbing, take a look:
- Improved efficiencyÂ
- Less risk of repairs
- Lower water bills
- Longer equipment lifespan
- Better quality of water
A great technician will make sure that your bathroom plumbing fixtures and equipment are in excellent shape. They may clean them, check them for clogs, test water pressure and more.Â
Be sure to ask your plumbing company what kinds of tasks they complete during a maintenance appointment before you schedule one.
Bathroom Plumbing Upkeep Tips
There are many ways that you can take care of your bathroom plumbing without being a professional. The plumbing in your bathroom helps you to complete important tasks throughout the day such as bathing and washing your hands.Â
With simple upkeep, such as cleaning to being mindful about what you flush down the toilet, you can substantially increase the efficiency of your bathroom plumbing. Here’s the expert info on how you can maintain every plumbing fixture in your bathroom.
Faucet Maintenance Tips
Both your bathtub and sink faucets require a bit of upkeep to continue efficiently functioning. The first thing that you can do to take care of your faucets is to tighten any loose screws or parts. All you have to do is grab a screwdriver and make sure that all parts are firmly in place.Â
The next thing that you should do is clean your aerator. Here is how to do that:
- Unscrew the aerator on your faucet and put it to the side.
- Fill a cup or bowl with white vinegar and place the aerator inside.
- Let it sit for a few hours. If the aerator has mineral deposits, let it sit until the deposits have dissolved.
- Take the aerator out and wipe it down with a clean rag.
It is highly recommended that you do this annually so that your aerator does not become clogged. You can also replace the aerator if the part is damaged. However, make sure that you measure the old one before you purchase a new one.
The last thing that you should do is look for any leaks. If you find a leak, be sure to call a plumber to come fix it. Leaky faucets can waste hundreds of gallons of water and substantially increase your water bill.Â
Shower Maintenance Tips
If you have multiple people sharing one shower, then it’s extremely important that you check off the showerhead and drain maintenance. Just like you clean an aerator, you should do the same thing for your showerhead. All you have to do is fill a bag with vinegar and tie it to the showerhead. After a few hours, or once the mineral deposits have dissolved, you can remove the vinegar.Â
You should also purchase a drain cover for your shower drain. This will catch any hair and other things that may float into your drain and cause clogs. If your shower has been slowly draining lately, there are a few things that you can do:
- Pour one third cup of vinegar into the drain followed by one third cup baking soda. Wait one minute and then pour almost boiling water down the drain. This should help to clear any build up.
- Purchase a toothed drain stick and put it into your drain. It should pull out any hair and other gunk that has been blocking your drain.Â
Whatever you do, just do not use a chemical drain cleaner on any drain in your home. These cleaners can corrode pipes and cause even worse damage. Lastly, clean all fixtures with a mild cleaning solution or vinegar to make sure that they are ready for action.
Toilet Maintenance Tips
The very best thing that you can do to take care of your toilets is to make sure that you don’t flush certain items down the toilet. Here’s a list of some common toilet cloggers:
- Sanitary products
- Cotton balls and swabs
- Hair
- Dental floss
- Diapers
While completing maintenance, you should check the water levels in your toilet tank. Open up your toilet tank and look for a pipe in the middle with a piece of tubing connected to it. This is the overflow pipe. If the water level comes above this pipe then you should adjust your toilet’s water levels. Here’s how to do this:
- Look for the fill valve, usually located next to the overflow pipe. Connected to the fill valve will be a float. The float has a pin to twist or a level to go up and down.
- Twist the valve, or pull the lever down, so that the float lowers.Â
- Flush the toilet and see where the water ends up.Â
- If it is still above the overflow tube, then adjust the valve again. Do this until the water is about one inch underneath the overflow pipe.
Taking care of your toilet will ensure that you encounter far fewer leaks, clogs, and other issues.
