Coughing. Sneezing. Sniffling. Does this sound like your home this season? The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that flu cases in Denton County have been on the rise since early December. Chances are, you know quite a few people that have been battling the flu. So what can you do to keep everyone in your home healthy? The Strittmatter team has rounded up a few tips to increase your chance for a flu-free home.

Wash your hands frequently

The biggest defense during flu season is frequent and diligent hand washing. Wash your hands after shaking hands with another person, using the restroom, being out in public, and after coughing or sneezing. And make sure you’re spending enough time at the sink! While 30 seconds is ideal, it’s not always practical. A good rule of thumb is to wash your hands long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. The friction of washing with soap will send germs down the drain instead of into your body. If hand washing isn’t an option, you can use hand sanitizer in a pinch. Be sure to keep hand sanitizer at the office, in your car, and around your home.

Disinfect shared spaces

The flu virus can live on hard surfaces around your home. To keep everyone inside healthy, be sure to disinfect shared spaces often. Be sure to pay special attention to spaces like doorknobs, handles, remotes, and countertops. Any area that multiple people come in contact with should be disinfected on the regular.

Use a humidifier

Studies show that the flu virus has a better chance of surviving in low-humidity conditions. If the weather has your home feeling dryer than usual, plug in a humidifier! It can reduce the chances of the flu virus spreading to members of your family. It can also be helpful if someone in your home does come down with the flu. Humid air can help respiratory symptoms as well as prevent dry hands and cracked lips.

Keep the air clean

Another way to keep your family healthy year round is the Air Scrubber Plus air purification system. It’s not your ordinary air purification system. The Air Scrubber Plus works to reduce contaminants inside your home. These contaminants can come from school, work, the grocery store, or anywhere else. They follow you home and end up on your countertops, floors, and door knobs. The Air Scrubber Plus contains ActivePure Technology, proven to destroy up to 99% of all surface contaminants and 90% of airborne contaminants, working to keep your family healthy.

In addition to aggravating a cold or the flu, contaminants in the air can also stir up allergy symptoms. Trying to get a restful night of sleep when you’re sneezing and coughing is no fun. The Air Scrubber Plus can help you get better sleep so you can fight off that virus!
