When you get your monthly bill, are you shocked to see how much water your household is using? The Strittmatter team wants to make sure your plumbing is in excellent condition. And part of that is sharing tips on how to conserve water! So we have a few tips to share that will help you and your family save water and lower your monthly bill.
Make smart choices with appliances
Did you know that the average American household uses up to 400 gallons of water a day? And large appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine use a large portion of your daily water consumptions.
When it comes to your washing machine, a few small changes can add up to big savings.
- Use cold or warm water instead of hot water. Many detergents are made especially for cold water, so your clothes will get just as clean.
- Minimize washing small loads. Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine.
- Make sure your items really need to be washed. Changes like hanging up your towel after taking a shower versus washing it daily can help cut down on loads of laundry.
Some of the same principles apply to your dishwasher as well! Wait until you have a full load of dishes before running your dishwasher to get the most out of the water being used.
Pay attention to your lawn care
Automatic sprinkles are an awesome convenience when it comes to taking care of your lawn. But make sure you are making smart choices with your lawn care. Take a look at your sprinklers in action and see if you are watering the grass or your sidewalk instead.
Another option that can be beneficial, especially in North Texas, is changing up your landscaping! Swap out a yard full of dead grass for drought-resistant plants that can stand up to the heat of North Texas summers. Not to mention, updating your lawn can add some unique curb appeal to your home. Update your toilet
Don’t flush your money down the drain! Most toilets use about 3.5 gallons per flush. While you can save money by switching to a low flush toilet, you can save even more money by doing it yourself! You can make a DIY low flush toilet by adding a heavy item (like a brick or stone) in the back of the tank to displace the water and conserve more water per flush. Also, if you notice that your toilet is running or leaking, call Strittmatters! Don’t let those leaks add any more money to your water bill.
Upgrade to a tankless water heater
If you’re serious about saving water and money, consider upgrading to a tankless water heater. A tankless water heater does not store water all the time. Instead, the water runs through the tankless heater which uses gas or electric energy to heat the water.
A great benefit of tankless water heaters is that they only use energy when a demand is present. So you won’t be wasting water (and running up your bill) until you turn on that faucet. Tankless water heaters can provide more hot water than a typical tank style water heater. That means no more running the faucet waiting for the water to finally warm up.
